We honour the diverse First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples, past and present, who have stewarded this land for generations, and we recognize the profound injustices they have faced, including the suppression of their cultural practices. Through oppressive legislation, residential schools, and the confiscation of regalia and ceremonial objects, Indigenous communities faced significant challenges in preserving their cultural heritage, including traditional dances.
We recognize the resilience of Indigenous peoples, who, despite these injustices, continue to preserve and celebrate their cultural traditions. In the spirit of reconciliation and solidarity, Folklorico Filipino Canada is committed to supporting Indigenous dance artists and their communities.
Toronto, known as Tkaronto, is a rich tapestry of immigrant cultures, including the Filipino community. Our heritage carries its own stories and the resilience of its own people. Filipino-Canadians have become an integral part of the multiculturalism in Canada, bringing their unique culture and traditions into Canada each year. We recognize that we are immigrants on settler land and this acknowledgement serves as a reminder of the importance of understanding and respecting the Indigenous land we inhabit.
We educate ourselves and others about the history, cultures and present-day issues faced by Indigenous peoples in Canada.
We encourage institutions and organizations to provide platforms and resources for Indigenous artists to showcase their work.
We support Indigenous-led arts initiatives, organizations and events. We attend performances, exhibitions and workshops organized by Indigenous artists and communities.
We use our platform to amplify the voices of Indigenous artists. We share their work and promote their contributions to the cultural landscape of Canada.
